Jeanette Russell’s review
for Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine
he Oleg Vidov story is a documentary that follows the extraordinary life journey of Russian actor Oleg Vidov. He escaped the USSR at 42 and rose to fame in the USA. Being faced with government disapproval Vidov decided to defect to America. The movie combines archival footage with commentary from people known to Oleg, as Brian Cox narrates.
This chronicle portrays the fascinating story of a defector, artist and movie star. In his own words Vidov stated " I fled the Soviet Union but Russia is my homeland " This theme seems to resonate right throughout his powerful story.
The doco is a glimpse into Soviet movie-making where content is state-controlled. Light is shed on the lesser known chapter in film history, as spectators are given insight into Oleg Vidov's life of excitement, fame and adventure, with a mix of threats and danger also present. Such an interesting perspective told by those that knew him and skillf ully sketched out by Cox. Thank you for the opportunity to review Oleg's dramatic tales and gripping history.
I highly recommend watching this film on SBS on the 24th of June.
